　　“Kidney deficiency” refers to a state in which the kidneys lack vitality. It is closely associated with an individual’s emotional state, lifestyle habits, and excessive sexual activity. 　　Can kidney deficiency cause epistaxis?

　　Kidney deficiency itself does not directly cause epistaxis. Nosebleeds are primarily triggered by “excess heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept) and high ambient temperatures, which force blood to circulate excessively. Common patterns include lung-heat, stomach-heat, and liver-fire; less frequently, yin deficiency with hyperactive fire or deficiency of healthy qi leading to loss of blood containment may also contribute. From a Western medical perspective, epistaxis may result from infectious diseases, febrile illnesses, hematologic disorders, rheumatic fever, hypertension, vitamin deficiencies, or chemical or drug toxicity.

　　Clinically, epistaxis most commonly arises from the pattern of “heat pathogen invading the lungs,” for which Sang Ju Yin (Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Decoction) may be modified accordingly. For stomach-heat, Jie Du Tang (Detoxifying Decoction) is adjusted; for liver-fire blazing upward, Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentiana Liver-Draining Decoction) is modified; and for dual qi and blood deficiency, Gui Pi Tang (Spleen-Nourishing and Blood-Enriching Decoction) is used with appropriate modifications. Topical treatments may be combined, such as applying Yunnan Baiyao locally for hemostasis, packing the nasal cavity with cotton soaked in indigo powder, or using moistened cotton dipped in nasal powder. Dietarily, patients should consume light, easily digestible foods, increase intake of vegetables and fruits, drink ample water, and engage in regular physical exercise to enhance resistance.
