Introduction
Currently, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for sensorineural tinnitus remains controversial. Some experts consider it effective, while others deem it ineffective; therefore, HBOT is not considered necessary for patients with sensorineural tinnitus. The primary mechanism of HBOT is to increase oxygen delivery to inner ear cells and promote restoration of intracellular blood supply, potentially leading to improvement or resolution of tinnitus.

The symptoms of neural tinnitus are typically persistent tinnitus. Some individuals can clearly localize the source of the tinnitus, whereas others may have difficulty identifying its precise location. Generally, however, if a person perceives a sound originating from within the head, this is classified as tinnitus. So, is hyperbaric oxygen therapy appropriate for neural tinnitus?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Neural Tinnitus

Currently, the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for neural tinnitus remains controversial. While some experts consider it effective, others deem it ineffective; thus, HBOT is generally not considered necessary for patients with neural tinnitus. The primary mechanism of HBOT involves increasing oxygen delivery to inner ear cells and promoting restoration of microcirculation, potentially facilitating recovery from tinnitus. However, the etiology of neural tinnitus is highly complex. Not all patients respond favorably to HBOT—some may even experience adverse effects such as worsening tinnitus or ear pain following treatment.

During acute episodes, patients should rest in bed in a dimly lit room and avoid noisy environments. Quiet rest is recommended. Once symptoms begin to subside, patients should gradually resume ambulation rather than remaining bedridden for prolonged periods. Even after symptom improvement, individuals previously engaged in occupations requiring high levels of concentration or physical coordination—such as driving, gymnastics, or dance—should refrain from immediately resuming their former work or training regimens.
