Introduction
Nosebleeds may result from dryness of the nasal mucosa, a condition commonly seen during autumn and winter—primarily due to dry weather causing rupture of capillaries inside the nose. To alleviate this symptom, using a humidifier indoors to maintain adequate moisture levels is recommended. Rhinitis can also cause nasal dryness and bleeding; allergic rhinitis, in particular, tends to recur frequently and may contribute to nasal dryness.

Some patients experience recurrent nosebleeds but are unsure of the underlying cause or why they occur. So, what causes nosebleeds?

Why Do Nosebleeds Occur?

Nosebleeds (epistaxis) may result from dryness-induced bleeding of the nasal mucosa—a common occurrence during autumn and winter, primarily due to dry ambient air causing rupture of delicate capillaries inside the nose. To alleviate this, using a humidifier indoors to maintain adequate moisture levels can help reduce nosebleed episodes. Rhinitis may also lead to nasal dryness and subsequent bleeding; chronic or recurrent rhinitis often exacerbates nasal dryness. In such cases, topical medications for rhinitis may be applied. However, patients should avoid picking their nose with fingers, as this may introduce infection and worsen symptoms.

Trauma—such as a direct blow to the nose—is another common cause of nosebleeds. Therefore, it is advisable to take precautions in daily life to prevent impact injuries to the nose. Severe trauma may not only cause bleeding but also result in nasal bone fractures.

Cardiovascular diseases may also contribute to nosebleeds. Additionally, changes in atmospheric pressure can trigger epistaxis. Thus, individuals experiencing frequent nosebleeds should monitor their blood pressure regularly to rule out hypertension or other abnormalities. Vitamin deficiencies—particularly long-term deficiency of vitamin C—may lead to scurvy, a condition whose manifestations include nosebleeds. We hope this article has been helpful.
