Introduction
Nausea and anorexia may be caused by erosive gastritis, gastric ulcers, *Helicobacter pylori* infection, or functional dyspepsia. If symptoms such as greasy stools and fatigue are present, hepatobiliary disorders—including hepatitis and cholecystitis—should not be ruled out. The patient may undergo diagnostic tests—including gastroscopy, *H. pylori* testing, hepatobiliary ultrasound, and liver function tests—to identify the underlying cause of nausea and anorexia and receive targeted treatment.

Occasional loss of interest in food or lack of appetite may result from gastrointestinal dysfunction; however, persistent or recurrent loss of appetite could indicate anorexia. Anorexia significantly impacts health—not only impairing the intake of essential nutrients but also predisposing individuals to other medical conditions. So, what causes nausea and anorexia?

Causes of Nausea and Anorexia

Nausea and anorexia may stem from erosive gastritis, gastric ulcers, Helicobacter pylori infection, or functional dyspepsia. If accompanied by symptoms such as aversion to greasy foods and fatigue, hepatic or biliary disorders—including hepatitis or cholecystitis—should also be considered. Patients are advised to undergo diagnostic tests—including gastroscopy, H. pylori testing, abdominal ultrasound (focusing on the liver and gallbladder), and liver function tests—to identify the underlying cause and receive targeted treatment. If the symptoms originate from gastric disease and are associated with epigastric pain or heartburn, proton pump inhibitors (e.g., pantoprazole or rabeprazole) and prokinetic agents (e.g., domperidone or trimebutine maleate) may be prescribed under physician guidance. For cholecystitis or related biliary conditions, anti-inflammatory and cholagogue medications (e.g., Xiaoyan Lidan tablets) may be indicated. Adopting healthy dietary habits is crucial—avoiding high-fat foods is strongly recommended.

If nausea and vomiting occur, smoking must be strictly avoided, and alcohol, coffee, tea, cold foods, and spicy dishes should also be eliminated. Limit intake of starchy foods such as potatoes, taro, vermicelli, cellophane noodles, and sweet potatoes. Avoid soda crackers; instead, adopt a pattern of smaller, more frequent meals. Refrain from consuming overly hard or difficult-to-digest foods. Avoid excessive water intake, and monitor intake of potential allergenic proteins—such as those found in fish, shrimp, eggs, crab, and dairy products. Fruits rich in organic acids—including hawthorn, citrus fruits, and waxberries—and their preparations may be beneficial, as these can help stimulate appetite.

Patients experiencing nausea and anorexia should seek timely medical evaluation and treatment to prevent disease progression. We hope this information proves helpful. Wishing you optimal health and a joyful life!
