Introduction
Nausea and dry heaving may be caused by acute gastritis or may occur in conjunction with other conditions, such as otolith dysfunction, Ménière’s syndrome, posterior circulation infarction, or cervical spondylosis. They may also coexist with chronic pharyngitis, severe electrolyte and fluid imbalances, or diabetic ketoacidosis. Comprehensive evaluation—including appropriate diagnostic testing—is essential; particular attention should be paid to detecting hyponatremia, if present.

Frequent dry heaving and nausea can damage the stomach and esophagus, causing harm to the body and negatively affecting one’s mood. Therefore, only by clearly identifying the underlying cause of recurrent dry heaving and nausea can we effectively alleviate and treat it. So, why does dry heaving and nausea persist?

Causes of Persistent Dry Heaving and Nausea

Nausea and dry heaving may stem from acute gastritis or may be associated with other conditions, such as otolith displacement, Ménière’s disease, posterior circulation infarction, or cervical spondylosis. They may also co-occur with chronic pharyngitis, severe electrolyte imbalances, or diabetic ketoacidosis. Comprehensive evaluation—including relevant laboratory and imaging tests—is essential. In particular, hyponatremia should be ruled out and corrected promptly. For women of childbearing age, menstrual and obstetric history must be carefully reviewed. If indicated, serum or urine human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) testing should be performed to exclude early pregnancy. When nausea, dry heaving, dizziness, vertigo, or visual field deficits are present, thorough neurological examination and appropriate neuroimaging studies should be conducted to investigate potential intracranial pathology.

When experiencing symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, appropriate dietary adjustments can help alleviate discomfort. For instance, consuming foods like corn, chestnuts, lotus root, and ginger may effectively ease nausea. Regular intake of white hyacinth bean congee or Buddha’s hand citrus congee may serve as supportive measures in managing nausea. Chestnuts possess spleen- and stomach-strengthening, kidney-tonifying, and essence-enriching properties; thus, they are especially beneficial for nausea caused by spleen-kidney deficiency—particularly when accompanied by hematemesis, lumbago, or limb weakness. Eating chestnuts or preparing chestnut congee may significantly relieve such nausea.

Patients experiencing persistent dry heaving and nausea should seek timely medical evaluation and treatment to prevent disease progression. We hope this information is helpful to you.
