Introduction
Individuals with gastroenteritis may consume foods such as purple sweet potatoes, lean meat, eggplant, and carrots. Although there are relatively few strictly prohibited foods for this condition, it is advisable to avoid overly spicy or acidic foods, as well as those that strongly stimulate gastric juice secretion. Alcohol and tobacco use should be minimized; overeating should be avoided, as should carbonated beverages like Sprite and Coca-Cola, which can cause gas. Additionally, meals should be taken regularly and in consistent, moderate portions.

Many people dislike eating meals regularly and often skip meals or eat only one large meal per day, placing significant strain on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Modern diets are rich and abundant, with high consumption of fatty meats and rich foods. Additionally, many individuals maintain active nightlife habits—frequenting restaurants and consuming alcohol—which severely compromises GI health. This lifestyle can easily lead to GI exhaustion and increase susceptibility to gastroenteritis or other digestive disorders. So, what foods are appropriate for individuals with gastroenteritis?

What Can Be Eaten During Gastroenteritis?

Individuals with gastroenteritis may consume foods such as purple sweet potatoes, lean meat, eggplant, and carrots. Although there are relatively few strictly prohibited foods during inflammation, it is advisable to avoid overly spicy, sour, or gastric acid–stimulating foods. Alcohol and tobacco use should be minimized; overeating must be avoided, as should carbonated beverages like Sprite and Coca-Cola, which produce gas. Meals should be taken regularly and in moderate portions. Furthermore, if gastric acid secretion is insufficient, nourishing broths—such as chicken soup or rich fish soup—may be consumed more frequently. Mildly acidic foods—including yogurt, sour fruit juices, and hawthorn—can also be eaten in moderation to stimulate appetite and enhance gastric acid production.

Note that pomegranates, apples, and persimmons contain oleanolic acid and tannic acid, which possess antidiarrheal and astringent properties—making them suitable for gastroenteritis patients. In cases of dehydration caused by gastroenteritis, patients may drink fruit juices, rice congee, or lightly salted water to replenish vitamins, fluids, and electrolytes. Foods should be soft, low in residue, non-irritating, and easily digestible. Regular physical exercise is recommended to strengthen overall constitution, and strict attention should be paid to water source safety and food hygiene.

In daily life, cultivating healthy lifestyle and dietary habits is essential. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
