Introduction
After gastrointestinal bleeding in elderly individuals, dietary management—such as consuming foods that protect the gastric mucosa—and appropriate medication are essential for recovery. Some people sustain injuries earlier in life; as they age, these old injuries may also contribute to gastric bleeding. In patients with liver cirrhosis, esophageal varices may develop and become fragile. If such patients consume coarse or abrasive foods, the varicose veins may rupture, leading to massive hemorrhage.

Gastric bleeding is a serious condition. It can significantly impair normal eating and digestion. Therefore, prompt medical treatment is essential—delayed intervention may pose severe risks to one’s health. So, how should elderly patients be cared for following gastric bleeding?

Post–Gastric Bleeding Care for Elderly Patients

After gastric bleeding, elderly patients should consume foods that protect the gastric mucosa and follow appropriate medication regimens under medical supervision. Some individuals sustain gastric injuries earlier in life; as they age, these old injuries may become reactivated and contribute to bleeding. In patients with cirrhosis, esophageal varices (dilated veins) are prone to rupture—especially when coarse or abrasive foods are ingested—leading to massive hemorrhage.

After hemostasis (bleeding cessation), patients should fast for several days under physician guidance, allowing time for ulcer or lesion healing. During this fasting period, intravenous nutritional support is provided. Once oral intake resumes, only liquid or very soft foods should be consumed to avoid irritating the healing gastric tissue. Foods should be non-irritating, non-spicy, non-greasy, and served at moderate temperatures—not excessively hot or cold.

In daily life, patients should prioritize foods that help protect the gastric mucosa. They must also take prescribed medications regularly, strictly adhere to their doctor’s instructions, and establish a routine of scheduled follow-up examinations. We hope this information proves helpful.
