Can proctitis be detected via anoscopy?
Gastrointestinal disorders are common illnesses. Among them, proctitis and rectal cancer have relatively high incidence rates and tend to recur frequently. So, can proctitis be detected using an anoscope?
Can proctitis be identified using an anoscope?
Anoscopy can detect proctitis; however, the length of the anoscope is limited. During clinical examination, it only allows visualization of the mucosa in the lower portion of the rectum. Clinically, findings may include mucosal hyperemia, edema, erosive bleeding points, or ulcerations in the distal rectum. Mucoid blood may even be observed at the base of the anoscope. Nevertheless, the anoscope cannot visualize the entire rectum. Therefore, for patients with inflammation confined to the lower rectum, diagnosis can be confirmed via anoscopy; however, a normal anoscopy does not rule out proctitis elsewhere in the rectum.

Patients with proctitis should pay close attention to their diet, ensure regular and unobstructed bowel movements, seek timely treatment, and undergo periodic follow-up examinations. Dietary adjustment is especially critical for these patients. In daily life, intake of irritating foods should be minimized, while nutrient-rich, non-irritating foods should be emphasized to avoid rectal irritation. Additionally, consumption of fiber-rich foods should be moderately increased to prevent constipation.

Proctitis is primarily associated with unhealthy lifestyle habits. Patients should therefore focus on dietary control and cultivate healthy bowel habits. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
