Introduction
Common symptoms of coloproctitis include abdominal pain, diarrhea, abdominal distension, mucoid stools, and purulent bloody stools. Because the colon loops around the abdominal cavity, the location of pain can vary widely; however, since the proximal and distal segments are most commonly affected, abdominal pain is more frequently localized to the left lower quadrant and right lower quadrant. Proctitis presents with numerous symptoms, which may vary depending on the underlying cause.

Coloproctitis is a common inflammatory disease of the rectum. In fact, its most frustrating aspect is its tendency to recur. During the course of the disease, patients often experience various uncomfortable symptoms; therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. So, what are the clinical manifestations of coloproctitis?

Clinical Manifestations of Coloproctitis
Common symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, abdominal distension, mucoid stools, and purulent or bloody stools. Because the colon loops around the abdominal cavity, the location of pain may vary widely. However, lesions most frequently occur in the initial (ascending) and terminal (sigmoid/rectal) segments; thus, abdominal pain is more commonly localized to the left lower and right lower quadrants. Rectal inflammation presents with numerous symptoms, which may differ depending on the underlying cause. For instance, ingestion of coarse food or foreign bodies causing anal trauma and subsequent inflammation may result in local swelling, pain, and bleeding.

Patients may also present with dyspepsia, diarrhea, abdominal pain, tenesmus, and hematochezia. Under a physician’s guidance, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparations—such as Zhishi Daozhi Wan (Hawthorn and Rhubarb Pill) and Huangqi Injection (Astragalus Injection)—may be used for treatment. Alternatively, Western medications—including antibiotics and Lizhu Changle (a probiotic preparation)—can be prescribed. Additional therapeutic options, such as saline enemas and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, may yield even more pronounced clinical benefits. Rectal inflammation is a relatively common condition. Upon diagnosis, some patients become especially anxious about potential progression to rectal cancer, leading to significant psychological stress. In reality, however, timely detection and prompt treatment can lead to complete recovery.

Patients are advised to adopt healthy lifestyle habits, maintain a balanced diet, and avoid spicy foods. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
