Introduction
Vertebrobasilar artery syndrome is associated with stenosis or occlusion of the vertebrobasilar arteries. Patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency may present with symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, ataxia, dysphagia, diplopia, hearing loss, and quadriplegia. This is a relatively severe condition; once diagnosed, prompt and active treatment is essential. The underlying etiology is linked to atherosclerosis and proximal stenosis of the major adjacent arteries.

As people age, their risk of developing cardiovascular disease increases. Many elderly individuals suffer from arteriosclerosis, which is commonly caused by hypertension, diabetes, physical inactivity, and other factors, leading to symptoms such as chest tightness and dizziness. So, how serious is vertebrobasilar arteriosclerosis?

How serious is vertebrobasilar arteriosclerosis?

Vertebrobasilar arteriosclerosis is indeed a serious condition. Vertebrobasilar artery syndrome is associated with stenosis or occlusion of the vertebrobasilar arteries. Patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency may experience dizziness, vomiting, ataxia, dysphagia, diplopia, and other symptoms. This is a relatively severe disorder; once diagnosed, prompt and active treatment is essential. Its underlying causes are closely linked to arteriosclerosis and proximal stenosis of adjacent major arteries.

This condition may lead to decreased distal perfusion pressure and even retrograde blood flow in neighboring vessels, resulting in a wide range of clinical manifestations. For ischemia and hypoxia caused by arterial stenosis and insufficient blood supply, vasodilators such as troxerutin and ginkgo biloba extract (e.g., Ginaton) may be used. Antiplatelet agents—such as enteric-coated aspirin—and lipid-lowering statins are also commonly prescribed. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary.

In daily life, patients should maintain a regular, balanced diet—avoiding spicy, irritating foods and overeating. They should also avoid staying up late. We hope this information is helpful to you.
