Can cough-variant asthma be cured?
Cough is both an independent disease and a symptom of many pulmonary conditions. This type of cough is more common during autumn and winter, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) considers its etiology and pathogenesis relatively complex. In treatment, it is essential first to identify the underlying cause and then initiate prompt and appropriate therapy. Herbal medicine offers excellent regulatory effects on the body; therefore, selecting TCM for managing chronic cough is a sound therapeutic approach. So, can cough-variant asthma be cured?
Can Cough-Variant Asthma Be Cured?
Cough-variant asthma cannot be cured, as it is a disease associated with immune dysregulation and genetic predisposition. Consequently, it induces chronic airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness; thus, exposure to allergens triggers recurrent coughing and asthmatic symptoms. Management focuses on modulating immune responses—under physician guidance, immunosuppressants or corticosteroids may be prescribed. Antihistamines or leukotriene inhibitors may help suppress mediator release, while bronchodilators can relieve symptoms by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle.

Theoretically, cough-variant asthma is not curable, but it can be effectively treated and controlled. Approximately 10–15% of children with cough-variant asthma achieve complete remission following treatment—though this may take several years, over a decade, or even decades. Some individuals remain symptom-free indefinitely. However, asthma may recur in adulthood or evolve into classic asthma. While, strictly speaking, asthma—including cough-variant asthma—is considered incurable, it remains highly treatable and controllable. With appropriate therapy, airway hyperresponsiveness—as assessed by bronchial provocation testing—may normalize (i.e., test results may turn negative), allowing patients to maintain normal work, daily life, and life expectancy.

Patients are advised to maintain regular sleep schedules (early to bed, early to rise), engage in regular physical exercise to enhance immunity, and practice good personal hygiene. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
