Introduction
Adult patients may develop parotitis, which could be mumps. Infection may occur—and thus parotitis manifest—if the patient lacks corresponding antibodies, has compromised immunity, or has been in contact with a mumps patient. Adult patients may also develop bacterial parotitis, which may originate from an infectious focus within the oral cavity.

Although mumps is not a severe disease, infection can still significantly impact a patient’s daily life and poses challenges for treatment. So why do adults develop mumps?

Why Do Adults Develop Mumps?

Adults may develop mumps—most commonly epidemic mumps. If an individual lacks corresponding antibodies or has compromised immunity and comes into contact with a mumps patient, infection may occur, leading to mumps. Adults may also develop bacterial parotitis, which can result from oral infection foci, upper respiratory tract infections, or retrograde bacterial invasion of the parotid gland. Additionally, bacterial parotitis may be triggered by sialolithiasis (salivary stones) or foreign bodies within the parotid duct.

If mumps is suspected, patients should seek medical evaluation promptly. Epidemic mumps is typically managed with antiviral medications, whereas bacterial parotitis requires antibiotic therapy. Viral causes of parotitis include mumps virus, herpes simplex virus, coxsackievirus, and influenza A virus; among these, mumps virus infection is the most common cause of epidemic mumps. Regardless of the underlying cause, accurate identification is essential for effective prevention and treatment.

When symptoms suggestive of disease appear, timely diagnosis and active cooperation with medical treatment are crucial. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
