Is a damp-heat constitution associated with yin deficiency or yang deficiency?
Yin deficiency and yang deficiency are common syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), yet most people have limited understanding of them and are unclear about their distinctions. Although yin and yang deficiencies typically do not cause pronounced discomfort, they can severely impair physical health and progressively weaken one’s constitution. So, is a “damp-heat” constitution associated with yin deficiency or yang deficiency?
Is the Damp-Heat Constitution Linked to Yin Deficiency or Yang Deficiency?
The damp-heat constitution is associated with yin deficiency. Managing yin deficiency complicated by damp-heat is particularly challenging: while yin deficiency requires nourishing yin (“nourishing yin” therapy), damp-heat necessitates clearing heat and drying dampness. This often creates a therapeutic conflict—between moistening (to nourish yin) and drying (to resolve dampness)—in herbal prescriptions. Nevertheless, several classical formulas effectively address this dual pathology. A commonly used prescription is Zhu Ling Tang (Polyporus Decoction), which nourishes yin, clears heat, and promotes diuresis. Its principal ingredients include Polyporus umbellatus (Zhu Ling), Poria cocos (Fu Ling), Alisma orientale (Ze Xie), donkey-hide gelatin (E Jiao), and talc (Hua Shi). Zhu Ling Tang possesses mild diuretic and draining properties, helping to eliminate excess water and dampness from the body.

The most common manifestations in patients with kidney yin deficiency include tidal fever, night sweats, and a sensation of heat in the palms, soles, and chest (“five-center heat”). Tidal fever refers to intermittent waves of heat that rise and subside rapidly—much like ocean tides—without lingering. Night sweats, literally “thief sweats,” describe sweating during sleep that ceases immediately upon waking; just as a thief arrives unnoticed while one sleeps and vanishes upon awakening, hence the name.

Patients are advised to maintain a light,清淡 diet and engage in moderate exercise to enhance overall immunity. We hope this information proves helpful.
