Introduction
Kidney Yang deficiency typically contraindicates the use of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan. This formula is primarily used to nourish the Liver and Kidneys and is generally indicated for Kidney Yin deficiency syndrome. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Kidney Yang deficiency refers to a constellation of symptoms—including mental fatigue, general lethargy, aversion to cold, and cold hands and feet—resulting from an overall decline in bodily function; it is predominantly characterized by symptoms of dry heat or deficient heat.

Kidney Yang deficiency syndrome is a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) referring to a pattern of symptoms resulting from insufficient Kidney Yang. Typical manifestations include weakness and soreness in the lower back and knees, aversion to cold, chills, and cold limbs—symptoms predominantly affecting the lower extremities. Additional signs may include dizziness, pallor or dull complexion, a pale, swollen, and moist tongue with a white coating, and a deep, weak pulse. Erectile dysfunction may also occur. So, can patients with Kidney Yang deficiency take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan?

Can Patients with Kidney Yang Deficiency Take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan?

Generally, patients with Kidney Yang deficiency should not take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan. This formula primarily nourishes the Liver and Kidneys and is conventionally indicated for Kidney Yin deficiency syndrome. In TCM, Kidney Yang deficiency reflects a generalized decline in bodily function, manifesting as mental fatigue, physical exhaustion, marked cold intolerance, and cold hands and feet. By contrast, Kidney Yin deficiency is characterized by “dry-heat” or “deficiency-heat” symptoms such as heat sensations in the palms and soles, irritability, dry face, and tinnitus.

Therefore, the appropriate treatment for Kidney Yang deficiency focuses on warming and tonifying Kidney Yang. Suitable formulas include Jin Kui Shen Qi Wan (Jin Kui Kidney Qi Pill), Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (Cinnamon and Aconite Rehmannia Pill), and You Gui Wan (Right-Returning Pill). These formulas incorporate herbs that mildly drain dampness and clear deficient heat—acting as adjuvant components. Liu Wei Di Huang Wan combines three tonifying and three draining ingredients, with the tonifying herbs used in greater proportion than the draining ones.

In daily life, patients should maintain an optimistic mindset, actively cooperate with their physicians’ treatment plans, take prescribed medications regularly and in correct dosages, and pay attention to daily self-care—thus facilitating prompt improvement of their condition.
