Introduction
Frequent colds may result from either yin deficiency or yang deficiency. Although distinguishing between yin and yang deficiency is complex, both conditions can predispose individuals to colds—primarily due to reduced body fluids, impairing the kidneys’ ability to nourish and moisten the body. Clinical manifestations may include dry mouth, dizziness, tinnitus, weight loss, night sweats, and sore throat. Under a physician’s guidance, patients may take herbal formulas such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Six Formula) or Zuo Gui Wan (Left-Returning Pill).

Some individuals have weak constitutions and are prone to catching colds frequently. Even minor exposure to wind-cold can trigger a cold in them. In severe cases, they may experience adverse reactions such as fever and headache every few days. At this point, effective measures must be taken to reduce the incidence of colds. So, is susceptibility to colds due to Yang deficiency or Yin deficiency?

Is susceptibility to colds caused by Yang deficiency or Yin deficiency?

Susceptibility to colds may result from either Yin deficiency or Yang deficiency. Although distinguishing between Yin and Yang deficiency is complex, both conditions can predispose individuals to colds. Yin deficiency primarily arises from reduced body fluids, leading to inadequate moistening by the kidneys. Patients commonly present with clinical manifestations including dry mouth, dizziness, tinnitus, weight loss, night sweats, and sore throat. Under medical guidance, medications such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Six Formula) or Zuo Gui Wan (Left-Returning Pill) may be prescribed to nourish Yin and tonify the kidneys, thereby alleviating symptoms.

Yang deficiency is mainly caused by factors such as aging, excessive sexual activity, or constitutional weakness. Patients with Yang deficiency often experience symptoms upon waking in the morning, including frequent urination, edema, generalized coldness, abnormal complexion, warm palms, nocturnal emissions, and characteristic low back and knee weakness. Under medical supervision, medications such as Jin Kui Shen Qi Wan (Golden Cabinet Kidney Qi Pill) or Si Shen Wan (Four Gods Pill) may be used to warm and tonify kidney Yang, thereby relieving symptoms.

Patients are advised to engage in appropriate outdoor physical activity regularly to strengthen their constitution and promote whole-body warmth. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
