Introduction
Itching in the throat, nausea, and dry retching may result from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), chronic pharyngitis, or acute gastroenteritis. In GERD, gastric contents reflux into the esophagus, leading to esophageal inflammation and subsequently causing throat itching, nausea, and dry retching. Chronic pharyngitis involves chronic inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa, submucosa, and lymphoid tissue, which can also produce these symptoms. Acute gastroenteritis—characterized by acute inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa—may similarly manifest as throat itching, nausea, and dry retching.

Throat itching, nausea, and dry retching may be caused by conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), chronic pharyngitis, or acute gastroenteritis.

1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Poor lifestyle and dietary habits, use of medications that relax the lower esophageal sphincter, or impaired esophageal peristalsis—any of which may allow gastric contents and duodenal fluid to reflux into the esophagus—can lead to GERD. This condition commonly manifests with symptoms including throat itching, nausea, and dry retching.

2. Chronic Pharyngitis

Chronic pharyngitis typically arises from recurrent episodes of acute pharyngitis that are inadequately treated, or from inflammatory stimulation originating in adjacent structures of the pharynx. It results in chronic inflammation involving the pharyngeal mucosa, submucosa, and lymphoid tissue, leading to symptoms such as throat itching, nausea, and dry retching.

3. Acute Gastroenteritis

Acute gastroenteritis may result from ingestion of contaminated food or water, or infection with pathogens such as viruses or bacteria. It triggers an acute inflammatory response in the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing symptoms including throat itching, nausea, dry retching, and diarrhea.
