Why does my stomach feel increasingly uncomfortable as the weather gets hotter?
Increased discomfort in the stomach during hot weather may result from conditions such as damp-heat in the spleen and stomach, indigestion, heatstroke, or pre-existing gastric disorders.
1. Damp-Heat in the Spleen and Stomach
Hot weather may contribute to damp-heat accumulation in the spleen and stomach, manifesting as gastric discomfort. This is often accompanied by other abnormal symptoms, such as cold hands and feet and fatigue.
2. Indigestion
During hot weather, improper dietary habits—such as overeating, consuming excessive raw, cold, or hard-to-digest foods—may weaken gastric motility and disrupt the balance of intestinal flora, leading to indigestion. Symptoms may include abdominal distension, belching, and abdominal pain.
3. Heatstroke
Excessive heat may also cause heatstroke, resulting in significant fluid loss and a stress response that triggers overproduction of gastric acid, thereby causing gastrointestinal symptoms.
4. Pre-existing Gastric Disorders
Patients with underlying gastric conditions—such as gastric ulcers or gastritis—often experience worsening symptoms during hot weather, including gastric distension, epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting.
