What causes diarrhea and red stool after eating dragon fruit?
Eating dragon fruit and having red diarrhea may be caused by consuming red-fleshed dragon fruit, or it could result from medical conditions such as enteritis or hemorrhoids.
1. Consuming red-fleshed dragon fruit
Dragon fruit is inherently cooling in nature and can promote bowel movements. Eating excessive amounts may easily lead to diarrhea. Red-fleshed dragon fruit contains large amounts of water, betacyanin (a natural pigment), and dietary fiber, which are generally not easily absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract and are usually excreted in stool. As a result, the stool may appear red after eating dragon fruit, giving the appearance of red diarrhea.
2. Enteritis
If one does not maintain proper dietary hygiene—such as failing to wash hands before meals or after using the toilet—or frequently consumes irritating foods like fried or grilled items—it may irritate the intestines and trigger an inflammatory response, leading to enteritis. Patients may experience intestinal bleeding, and after eating dragon fruit, they might also develop red diarrhea.
3. Hemorrhoids
In patients with hemorrhoids, the hemorrhoidal nodes consist of dilated venous clusters. In cases of internal hemorrhoids, defecation can cause friction, leading to mucosal bleeding and erosion, resulting in rectal bleeding. If large quantities of dragon fruit are consumed, this may also lead to red diarrhea after eating the fruit.
