Why do I frequently suffer from diarrhea when the weather is hot?
Frequent diarrhea during hot weather may result from improper diet, heatstroke, or acute gastroenteritis.
1. Improper Diet
Frequent diarrhea in hot weather may be caused by excessive consumption of cold or chilled foods—such as ice-cold beer or ice cream—which repeatedly expose the gastrointestinal tract to cold stimuli, thereby impairing intestinal digestive function. It may also stem from regularly consuming food left out for extended periods; spoilage can lead to bacterial or viral infection of the intestines.
2. Heatstroke
Prolonged exposure to high-temperature environments—or having a constitutionally weak body that poorly tolerates heat—can cause excessive internal heat production. If heat dissipation is inadequate, heatstroke may occur, manifesting with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, resulting in recurrent diarrhea during hot weather.
3. Acute Gastroenteritis
Frequent diarrhea in hot weather may also be due to consumption of spoiled or unhygienically prepared food, leading to infection by pathogens such as *Vibrio parahaemolyticus* or *Salmonella*. This triggers acute inflammatory changes in the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing acute gastroenteritis and subsequent diarrhea.
