Why does my throat hurt first on the left side and then on the right side?
Pain in the left side of the throat followed by pain in the right side may be caused by unhealthy lifestyle and dietary habits, or conditions such as tonsillitis or pharyngitis.
1. Unhealthy lifestyle and dietary habits
Frequently consuming spicy and irritating foods, overusing the voice, and failing to replenish fluids promptly can lead to dryness of the throat, resulting in throat pain that shifts from the left side to the right.
2. Tonsillitis
When the body's immunity decreases, infection by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi allows them to multiply and invade the tonsils, causing tonsillitis. This leads to congestion and swelling of the tonsils and surrounding tissues, resulting in shifting throat pain—from left to right—accompanied by symptoms such as fever and headache.
3. Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis is usually caused by excessive voice use, exposure to physical and chemical irritants such as dust or noxious gases, or infections due to bacteria or viruses. It results in acute inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa, submucosal tissue, and lymphoid tissue, leading to shifting throat pain (left to right), coughing, hoarseness, and other symptoms.
