Introduction
Elevated thyroid function test results may be caused by chronic thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, or follicular hyperfunction of the thyroid gland, among other conditions. Interpretation requires evaluation of specific parameters, including free thyroxine (FT4), total thyroxine (TT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total triiodothyronine (TT3), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), and thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb).

  Elevated thyroid function test results may be caused by chronic thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, or follicular hyperfunction, among other conditions; interpretation typically requires evaluation of specific laboratory parameters. Common thyroid function tests include free thyroxine (FT4), total thyroxine (TT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total triiodothyronine (TT3), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), and thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb).

  1. Chronic Thyroiditis

  In patients with chronic thyroiditis, thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and/or thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) are often elevated; this autoimmune condition may manifest as abnormal (e.g., elevated) thyroid function test results.

  2. Hypothyroidism

  In hypothyroidism, TSH levels are typically elevated, while FT4 and FT3 levels are reduced. Although TSH is high, the term “elevated thyroid function indicators” in this context refers to abnormal test patterns—particularly elevated TSH—which may be described colloquially as “high thyroid function indicators.”

  3. Thyroid Follicular Hyperfunction

  Follicular hyperfunction leads to excessive secretion of thyroid hormones, resulting in elevated levels of TT4, TT3, FT3, and/or FT4—thus producing abnormally high thyroid function test values.
