Can you eat watermelon after eating hot pot?
It is generally acceptable to eat watermelon after having hotpot, but moderation is essential—excessive consumption may lead to discomfort.
Watermelon is rich in various nutrients, including vitamins, malic acid, glucose, and fructose. Consuming it can help relieve summer heat, alleviate irritability, stimulate saliva production, quench thirst, and replenish essential nutrients. If the hotpot consumed is mild (non-spicy), eating a moderate amount of watermelon afterward is usually safe. However, excessive intake should be avoided, as watermelon is considered a “cold”-natured fruit in traditional Chinese medicine. Overconsumption—especially of chilled watermelon or following a very spicy hotpot meal—may overstimulate the gastrointestinal tract, potentially causing diarrhea. In more severe cases, symptoms such as abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and indigestion may occur.
In daily life, maintaining a balanced diet is important. Spicy and irritating foods are generally discouraged, particularly for individuals with weak spleen-stomach function or compromised gastrointestinal health. For such individuals, consuming watermelon immediately after a spicy hotpot meal is not recommended, to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort.
