How to Detoxify After Eating Green Tomatoes

Introduction
After consuming green tomatoes, drink more water to dilute solanine and promote its excretion through urine. If signs of poisoning occur, use fingers, chopsticks, tongue depressors, or similar objects to stimulate the back of the throat and base of the tongue to quickly induce vomiting and expel the toxic substance. If vomiting does not occur easily, drink warm water to further stimulate the throat. In cases of clear poisoning with noticeable discomfort, perform gastric lavage via nasogastric tube insertion to remove the stomach contents.

After consuming unripe (green) tomatoes, one may opt for measures such as drinking ample water or inducing vomiting to counteract toxicity; gastric lavage at a hospital is also an effective detoxification method.

1. Drink Plenty of Water

If only a small quantity of unripe tomatoes has been ingested and symptoms of poisoning are mild or absent, drinking copious amounts of water can help dilute solanine—the toxic alkaloid present in green tomatoes—and facilitate its excretion via urine. This reduces the metabolic burden on the kidneys and thereby aids detoxification.

2. Induce Vomiting

If early signs of poisoning appear but the individual remains conscious and alert, vomiting may be induced to expel toxins. This can be achieved by gently stimulating the pharynx and base of the tongue using a finger, chopsticks, or a tongue depressor. For individuals who find it difficult to vomit spontaneously, drinking warm water followed by gentle throat stimulation with a finger may help trigger vomiting.

3. Gastric Lavage

If pronounced symptoms of poisoning occur after ingestion of unripe tomatoes—such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or neurological disturbances—prompt medical attention at a professional healthcare facility is strongly advised. Gastric lavage, performed via nasogastric or orogastric tube insertion, effectively removes gastric contents and serves as a critical intervention for detoxification.
