Elevated potassium levels in the elderly may cause symptoms such as slowed heart rate, numbness, and muscle pain. In severe cases, symptoms like confusion, nausea, and vomiting may occur, endangering the normal functioning of various body systems. Potassium is an essential element for the human body. Since older adults generally have weakened immune systems, potassium deficiency should be promptly corrected by consuming more potassium-rich foods.

Elevated potassium levels (hyperkalemia) in elderly individuals may cause symptoms such as bradycardia (slowed heart rate), numbness, and muscle aches; severe cases may present with confusion, nausea, and vomiting—potentially impairing the normal function of multiple organ systems.

1. Effects on the Nervous and Muscular Systems

In elderly individuals, potassium deficiency (hypokalemia) can adversely affect the nervous and muscular systems, leading to symptoms including muscle aches, generalized weakness, and abnormal sensations (e.g., tingling or numbness) in the limbs.

2. Effects on the Cardiovascular System

Hypokalemia in the elderly may impair cardiovascular function, resulting in arrhythmias and bradycardia. In severe cases, it may even precipitate cardiac arrest or ventricular fibrillation.

Hypokalemia can also disrupt gastrointestinal function, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and bloating—signs of impaired digestion.

Potassium is an essential mineral for human health. Given that elderly individuals often have diminished immune function and are more susceptible to electrolyte imbalances, timely potassium supplementation is crucial when deficiency is detected. Dietary sources rich in potassium—such as spinach and legumes—should be incorporated into daily meals. When necessary, oral potassium supplements may be prescribed under a physician’s guidance to correct the deficiency.
