How long does subacute thyroiditis last?
Subacute thyroiditis generally lasts about 2 to 3 months; however, in some patients it may persist for six months to a year. The exact duration depends on individual factors such as the patient's physical condition, severity of the disease, and treatment response.
Subacute thyroiditis is usually caused by a viral infection leading to inflammatory changes in the thyroid gland. If the condition is mild and the patient has good overall health, recovery may occur spontaneously within 2 to 3 months. With active cooperation in medical treatment, the recovery period may be even shorter.
In patients with more severe disease, advanced age, or poor physical condition, recovery tends to be slower. Without adequate and timely medical treatment, the course of illness may be further prolonged, lasting up to six months or even a year.
Patients with subacute thyroiditis are advised to actively cooperate with their physicians during treatment. Maintaining a light diet and avoiding spicy or irritating foods during treatment can help improve the condition.
