What causes numbness in the legs and feet?
Numbness in the foot and thigh may result from poor posture, cervical spondylosis, or lumbar disc herniation.
1. Poor Posture
Habitual poor posture—such as prolonged standing, sitting, or squatting—can impair blood circulation in the legs and compress surrounding nerves, leading to numbness, commonly felt in the foot and thigh.
2. Cervical Spondylosis
Prolonged static postures during desk work without adequate movement may cause chronic strain of the cervical spine, resulting in cervical osteophyte formation and nerve compression; this can also manifest as numbness in the foot and thigh.
3. Lumbar Disc Herniation
Lumbar disc herniation that compresses the sciatic nerve typically causes low back and leg pain, as well as numbness in the lower limbs. Consequently, patients with lumbar disc herniation may also experience numbness in the foot and thigh.
Since numbness in the foot and thigh has multiple potential causes, prompt medical evaluation is recommended if symptoms persist or fail to improve, to establish an accurate diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment in collaboration with a healthcare provider.
