What causes “lychee mouth numbness”?
Litchi-induced numbness in the mouth may be caused by internal heat, allergies, or toxic reactions.
1. Internal Heat
Litchi is considered a relatively "hot" food in nature. Consuming excessive amounts without moderation may lead to an accumulation of heat in the body, resulting in symptoms of internal heat. In such cases, oral numbness may occur, often accompanied by swollen and painful gums, as well as dryness and sore throat.
2. Allergic Reaction
Individuals with sensitive constitutions or those allergic to litchi may experience mouth numbness after consumption. In more severe cases, this may be accompanied by swelling, itching, and, in some instances, even shock.
3. Toxic Reaction
Litchi itself is not toxic, and moderate consumption is generally harmless. However, eating large quantities of fresh litchi within a short period may trigger hypoglycemia and lead to toxic reactions, causing adverse symptoms such as oral numbness, excessive sweating, and fainting.
