Illustrated Guide to Removal of Exposed Kirschner Wires
An exposed Kirschner wire (K-wire) is a stainless steel pin used for internal fixation in orthopedic surgeries, which typically requires hospital visit and removal by a qualified physician. The procedure is as follows:
1. Prior to removal, the patient must undergo an X-ray examination. The doctor evaluates the imaging to check for fracture healing and any abnormalities, determining whether the K-wire can be safely removed.

2. The doctor grasps the end of the wire with forceps and steadily applies gentle traction to remove the K-wire.
3. After complete removal of the K-wire, the doctor disinfects the puncture site with iodophor and applies gauze with temporary pressure to stop bleeding.
4. If the K-wire cannot be removed with forceps, the doctor may secure the wire and use a specialized drill for extraction. After removal, the wound is disinfected and dressed.
