What symptoms can be caused by poor cranial nerve function?
Symptoms resulting from impaired cranial nerve function must be analyzed according to their underlying causes. Common etiologies include neurasthenia, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, and cerebellitis.
1. Neurasthenia
If a patient remains under excessive stress or chronic anxiety for an extended period, the nervous system’s functional capacity may be exceeded, thereby triggering neurasthenia. Typical manifestations include sleep disturbances, heightened emotional irritability and distress, and muscle-tension-related pain.
2. Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction
Intense emotional excitement, psychological trauma, or overwhelming mental stress can adversely affect the cranial nerves, leading to autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Key symptoms include insomnia, headache, dizziness, generalized fatigue and weakness, episodes of chills and fever, and fasciculations (muscle twitching).
3. Cerebellitis
When cerebellitis arises from viral infection or autoimmune reactions, patients commonly experience hearing loss, ataxia, nystagmus, dizziness, vertigo, and cognitive impairment.
