Emergency Management of Febrile Seizures in Adults
The emergency management of febrile seizures in adults includes maintaining a proper body position, ensuring airway patency, and promptly applying physical cooling measures.
1. Maintain a proper body position
First, lay the patient down flat on their back with the head turned to one side. Remove any hard objects nearby to prevent injury.
2. Ensure airway patency
Clear secretions from the mouth and nose immediately to prevent choking. Loosen the collar and belt to help maintain an open airway. Additionally, place a chopstick or spoon in the patient's mouth to prevent tongue biting.
3. Apply physical cooling
Cooling should be initiated promptly. Avoid heavy clothing; instead, expose the limbs and use cold compresses with ice packs or wipe the body with cool water to reduce body temperature. Also, ensure good ventilation to support adequate breathing.
In most cases, symptoms gradually subside within 3 to 5 minutes. After recovery, the patient should drink plenty of fluids, rest adequately, and then go to the hospital immediately to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment accordingly.
