Can you drink alcohol after taking semaglutide?
Semaglutide is generally not recommended with alcohol consumption.
Semaglutide usually refers to semaglutide injection, a novel long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. By acting on intestinal secretin, it slows down food absorption and lowers blood glucose levels. It is clinically used primarily for managing type 2 diabetes. Alcohol mainly consists of water and ethanol. When ethanol enters the body, it stimulates insulin secretion and simultaneously inhibits glycogen breakdown in the liver, reducing glucose production and increasing glucose utilization, which can lead to further lowering of blood glucose levels. Drinking alcohol during semaglutide treatment may cause symptoms of hypoglycemia such as dizziness, palpitations, or arrhythmia. These symptoms might be masked by signs of intoxication, posing risks to the patient's health. Therefore, alcohol consumption is not advised after receiving semaglutide injections.
Patients with diabetes should also focus on correcting unhealthy lifestyle and dietary habits, avoid drinking and smoking, and engage in appropriate outdoor physical activities, which can aid in recovery and overall health.
