Nonspecific vulvitis is a simple bacterial infection of the vulva. Common pathogens include Staphylococcus, β-hemolytic streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and Proteus. It can be caused by various physical and chemical factors, such as excessive vaginal discharge due to cervical inflammation, vaginitis, or cervical cancer, which irritate the vulvar area; as well as exposure to menstrual blood, urine from patients with urinary incontinence or vesicovaginal fistula, and menstrual blood from diabetic patients.

What Is Simple Vulvitis?

Simple vulvitis is a nonspecific type of vulvitis caused by a straightforward bacterial infection. Common pathogens include Staphylococcus, beta-hemolytic streptococcus, Escherichia coli, and Proteus species. Various physical and chemical factors may contribute to its development: excessive vaginal discharge caused by conditions such as cervicitis, vaginitis, or cervical cancer can irritate the vulva; prolonged exposure to menstrual blood, urine from patients with urinary fistula, or feces from those with fecal fistula can also lead to skin irritation. Additionally, using sanitary pads, wearing synthetic fiber underwear, and poor vulvar hygiene may promote bacterial growth and result in vulvitis.

Patients with simple vulvitis may take tetracycline orally as directed by a physician. Tetracycline has a similar antimicrobial spectrum to other tetracyclines and is effective against Gram-positive cocci, particularly Staphylococcus and Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Erythromycin has an antimicrobial spectrum similar to penicillin and is particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus pyogenes, viridans group streptococci, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, Clostridium species, and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It also exhibits notable inhibitory effects against certain Gram-negative bacteria, such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Helicobacter pylori, Bordetella pertussis, Brucella species, Legionella, Haemophilus influenzae, and Bacteroides.
