It measures two key markers during the first trimester: pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and free beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (free β-hCG). These indicators are used together to assess whether the fetus may have chromosomal abnormalities, particularly trisomy 21 (Down syndrome). Under normal circumstances, levels of free β-hCG in maternal serum decrease as gestational age increases, while PAPP-A levels steadily rise.
However, in cases of trisomy 21 syndrome, free β-hCG levels are significantly higher than those in a normal pregnancy, while PAPP-A levels tend to be lower. Therefore, the higher the level of free β-hCG and the lower the level of PAPP-A, the greater the risk of trisomy 21 syndrome.
