Can COVID-19 infection in men affect fertility?
In general, novel coronavirus infection does not significantly affect male fertility. However, in a small number of cases, the disease may impact the reproductive system and thereby affect fertility.
Novel coronavirus infection may cause symptoms such as fever, fatigue, dry cough, nasal congestion, and runny nose. Generally, the virus primarily damages the lungs and respiratory tract, and rarely infects the reproductive system. Therefore, it usually does not affect normal fertility or the reproductive needs of male patients. However, if in a minority of men the testes or semen are affected by the novel coronavirus, there might be some impact on fertility, though this negative effect is minimal and unlikely to result in infertility.
It should be noted that if a man is diagnosed with the infection, he should not become overly anxious. He should immediately report the condition, take proper personal protective measures, avoid contact with others, and follow a doctor's guidance for treatment using medications such as dextromethorphan tablets or aspirin tablets.
