Introduction
Symptoms of Liver Yang Rising: 1. Liver and Kidney Yin Deficiency: The most direct manifestations of Liver Yang Rising include distending pain in the head and eyes, tinnitus, dizziness, flushed face and red eyes, as well as soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees. 2. Internal Disturbance by Excess Yang: This disrupts the Heart-Mind, leading to restlessness of the spirit and soul, commonly presenting as poor sleep quality, insomnia, and vivid dreams. 3. Impaired Nourishment of the Liver: This results in irritability, quick temper, and emotional instability.

Liver Yang Rising Syndrome is a diagnostic pattern in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It refers to a decline or weakening of the liver’s function of coursing and draining Qi, resulting in impaired free flow of Liver Qi and its upward surging—termed “Liver Yang Rising,” also known as “Liver Yang Rebelliousness” or “Excess Liver Yang.” What, then, are the clinical manifestations of Liver Yang Rising? The following section addresses this question.

Clinical Manifestations of Liver Yang Rising

1. Liver-Kidney Yin Deficiency

The most direct symptoms of Liver Yang Rising include distending pain in the head and eyes, tinnitus, dizziness, flushed complexion, and red eyes. Additionally, patients may experience soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees, along with a sensation of heaviness in the head and lightness in the feet—commonly attributable to Yin deficiency failing to anchor Yang, thereby allowing Yang to rise excessively.

2. Internal Disturbance by Excess Yang

When excess Liver Yang internally disturbs the Heart-Mind, it disrupts mental calm and spirit stability, frequently manifesting as poor sleep quality, insomnia, and vivid dreams.
