Introduction
Pregnant women should consume mint candies sparingly. Mint candies are made from mint leaves combined with refined white sugar. Mint has properties that help release exterior pathogens, dispel wind-heat, and promote sweating, while white sugar helps clear heat and soothe the throat—making it beneficial for treating influenza, alleviating internal heat, and relieving sore throat. However, mint is pungent and cooling in nature and possesses a stimulating effect; therefore, pregnant women are advised to limit their intake of mint candies.

Peppermint candy is a confection made by blending refined white sugar and peppermint. Peppermint is considered “cold” in nature according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and possesses properties that dispel wind-heat, clear the head and eyes, and soothe the throat. Additionally, due to its menthol content, peppermint also helps regulate liver Qi and alleviate emotional stagnation. So—can pregnant women consume peppermint candy? The following addresses this question.

Can Pregnant Women Eat Peppermint Candy?

Pregnant women should limit their intake of peppermint candy. This candy is formulated using peppermint and refined white sugar. Peppermint has properties that help release exterior pathogens, disperse wind-heat, and promote sweating; white sugar offers heat-clearing and throat-soothing effects. When combined, these ingredients effectively dispel wind-heat and relieve sore throat—making them useful for treating influenza, alleviating internal heat, and easing throat swelling and pain. However, peppermint is pungent and cooling in nature and possesses irritant properties; therefore, pregnant women are advised to consume it sparingly. Peppermint candy contains peppermint-derived compounds, and from a medical perspective, the aromatic constituents in peppermint can cross the placental barrier and enter the fetal circulation. These substances may exert an irritant effect and potentially interfere with fetal growth and development.

Additional Information: Snacks Unsuitable for Pregnant Women

1. Popcorn

Popcorn often contains high levels of lead, which poses significant harm to brain cells. Excessive lead intake by expectant mothers not only damages maternal health but may also severely impair fetal neurological development.

2. Ice Cream

Ice cream—and similarly, stir-fried yogurt—contains extremely high sugar content, which can suppress maternal appetite. Consuming such items before meals may further diminish hunger, reducing nutritional intake. Moreover, cold foods may cause abdominal distension and diarrhea.

3. Fried Dough Sticks (Youtiao)

Fried dough sticks (youtiao) and crispy fried pancakes may contain aluminum. The World Health Organization recommends that daily aluminum intake should not exceed 60 mg, as excessive aluminum impairs cognitive function and damages neurons. Therefore, expectant mothers should minimize consumption of youtiao, crispy pancakes, and avoid cooking with aluminum cookware whenever possible.
