The big toe nail has turned white.
The big toenail turning white is usually caused by a fungal infection, but it may also result from anemia or deficiency of certain elements.
1. Fungal Infection
Poor hygiene, sharing personal care items, or contact with individuals who have fungal infections can easily lead to transmission. Symptoms include the nail turning white, nail separation (onycholysis), thickening of the nail, and itching of the surrounding skin. After diagnosis, apply antifungal medications such as amorolfine solution, ciclopirox solution, or hydrochloride amorolfine cream as directed by a physician.
2. Anemia
Long-term picky eating, unbalanced diet, or irregular eating habits may lead to anemia. Anemia reduces the number of red blood cells in the body, causing symptoms such as pale complexion, fatigue, whitening of the nails, and brittle nails and hair. It is recommended to consume iron- and blood-enriching foods such as donkey-hide gelatin (ejiao) and red dates, and maintain regular eating patterns.
3. Deficiency of Certain Elements
A lack of nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, or zinc may cause the toenails to turn white, along with other symptoms like poor sleep quality, hair loss, and weight loss. Under medical guidance, supplement the deficient nutrients and maintain good local hygiene in daily life.
