What are the side effects of long-term use of glycerin suppositories?
Long-term use of glycerin enema (Kaisailu) can easily cause mucosal damage, worsen constipation symptoms, and may lead to diarrhea. It has many side effects and is not recommended for prolonged use.
1. Causes Mucosal Damage
Glycerin enema is primarily used to treat constipation. It works by briefly stimulating the intestinal wall to trigger a defecation reflex, thereby accelerating bowel movements and relieving constipation. However, frequent use leads to repeated stimulation of the intestinal lining, which may cause mucosal injury, harm health, reduce drug sensitivity, and gradually diminish its effectiveness.
2. Worsens Constipation Symptoms
Glycerin enema should only be used as an auxiliary medication to help alleviate constipation, not as a cure. Continuous reliance on it may lead to dependency, increasing the risk of developing stubborn or chronic constipation and exacerbating existing symptoms.
3. Causes Diarrhea
For individuals experiencing constipation and difficulty in defecation, short-term use of glycerin enema under medical guidance can help prevent bloating and abdominal pain caused by straining. However, long-term use should be avoided as it may result in diarrhea. The underlying cause of constipation should be identified and addressed. Dietary adjustments such as consuming more fiber-rich foods, drinking plenty of water, and establishing regular bowel habits are recommended.
