What should I do if I vomit continuously after drinking too much alcohol?
When excessive drinking leads to persistent vomiting, the appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause. It could be due to irritation of the gastric mucosa, alcohol allergy, or acute gastroenteritis.
1. Gastric Mucosal Irritation
Persistent vomiting after heavy drinking may result from alcohol irritating the gastric mucosa. In such cases, drinking honey water or milk may help. Alternatively, medications that protect the gastric mucosa can be used under a doctor's guidance. Commonly used medications include sucralfate and aluminum magnesium carbonate.
2. Alcohol Allergy
If vomiting is caused by an alcohol allergy, stop drinking immediately. Under medical advice, take antihistamines to manage the allergic reaction. Commonly prescribed medications include cetirizine and loratadine. In some cases, corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone or methylprednisolone may also be used in combination.
3. Acute Gastroenteritis
If vomiting is due to acute gastroenteritis, follow your doctor’s instructions to use medications that suppress gastric acid secretion, such as omeprazole or lansoprazole. Additionally, probiotics like bifidobacteria and bacillus subtilis can be taken to help restore intestinal balance.
