What not to eat when experiencing wisdom tooth pain
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the dental arch, also known as third molars. Pain associated with them is primarily caused by inflammation and infection affecting the wisdom tooth and surrounding tissues. It is not recommended to consume irritating, hard, or overly sweet foods.
1. Irritating foods
Spicy or pungent vegetables and seasonings such as chili peppers, garlic, onions, ginger, mustard, and pepper should be avoided, as they can hinder healing of inflamed wisdom teeth, intensify pain, and make treatment more difficult and time-consuming.
2. Hard foods
Avoid excessively hard foods such as soybeans, sunflower seeds, peanuts, and betel nuts. These foods can irritate the gums around the erupting wisdom tooth. Chewing hard foods may exacerbate pain during biting and negatively affect oral health.
3. Overly sweet foods
Foods high in sugar, such as lollipops, ice cream, and milk tea, should be avoided, as they may contribute to dental caries and other oral conditions, potentially worsening pain symptoms.
Patients experiencing wisdom tooth pain should maintain a light, soft, nutritious diet—such as soft congee with preserved egg and lean pork. Additionally, good oral hygiene practices should be followed, including brushing teeth regularly in the morning and evening. If wisdom tooth inflammation occurs, appropriate anti-infective treatment should be administered under medical guidance. This may include anaerobic antibiotics such as metronidazole or tinidazole, or antibiotics effective against oral infections, such as roxithromycin or erythromycin.
