Can leftover iced tea from the night before still be consumed?
It is not recommended to drink iced tea that has been left overnight.
Iced tea left overnight has been exposed to air for an extended period. Since iced tea contains abundant sugars, it provides a favorable environment for the growth of bacteria and fungi. As a result, harmful microorganisms may multiply in the beverage. Consuming contaminated iced tea can introduce bacteria and viruses into the gastrointestinal tract, potentially disrupting digestive function and triggering conditions such as gastroenteritis, leading to symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, or bloating. Additionally, iced tea contains substances like polyphenols, which may oxidize when exposed to air over time, forming various compounds that are harmful to the body. Drinking large amounts of overnight iced tea may therefore cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
It is advisable to tightly seal any leftover iced tea and store it properly to prevent bacterial or fungal contamination. In daily life, avoid consuming other beverages that have been left overnight to protect your health. Also, note that iced tea should not be consumed together with seafood, milk, or mutton, as this may lead to indigestion.
