Why do teeth hurt a few days before labor?

Generally, toothache a few days before labor may be caused by excessive internal heat ("shang huo"), dental caries, or pulpitis. Management can include cold compresses and improved oral hygiene under a doctor's guidance. It is also advisable to consume more foods rich in protein, vitamins, and other nutrients—such as milk and apples—to help alleviate symptoms of excessive internal heat.

1. Excessive internal heat ("shang huo"): This condition in pregnant women may result from improper diet or emotional instability, and can lead to symptoms such as mouth ulcers and toothaches. Usually, no special treatment is required. However, pregnant women are advised to maintain a light diet, stay in a positive mood, and increase intake of nutrient-rich foods high in protein and vitamins—like milk and apples—to help reduce internal heat.

2. Dental caries: Hormone levels during pregnancy fluctuate, which may lead to cravings for acidic, spicy, or overly sweet foods. These dietary preferences can erode tooth enamel. If proper dental care is neglected, this may result in cavities and tooth decay, potentially causing tooth pain. Pregnant women should strengthen dental care by rinsing after meals, brushing teeth promptly, and developing good oral hygiene habits.

3. Pulpitis: Significant hormonal changes during pregnancy may reduce immune function. When tooth damage exists, bacterial infection can lead to pulpitis. Pregnant women should maintain good oral hygiene. For severe tooth pain, applying a cold compress appropriately may help relieve discomfort.
