Can epilepsy patients eat watermelon?
Generally, people with epilepsy can consume watermelon in moderation.
Watermelon contains abundant vitamins, protein, fructose, and other nutrients that can provide adequate nourishment for the body. The vitamins in watermelon can also promote metabolism to some extent, enhance immune function, and support recovery. However, excessive consumption should be avoided. Watermelon has a high water content and possesses strong diuretic properties, which may dilute the effectiveness of antiepileptic medications and impair seizure control.
Patients are advised not to eat chilled watermelon, as it may adversely affect the gastrointestinal tract and lead to gastroenteritis. Leftover watermelon stored overnight should also be avoided, since bacteria can multiply rapidly on its surface, increasing the risk of food poisoning when consumed. People with epilepsy should maintain sufficient sleep in daily life to prevent worsening of their condition.
