Can newborns sleep on a hard board bed?
Newborns can generally sleep on a hard board bed, which is beneficial for physical development, but a soft blanket should be placed on the bed to enhance comfort.
After birth, a newborn's spine and head are aligned in a straight line. As the baby grows, the spine gradually develops natural curves. Sleeping on a hard board bed promotes healthy bone development and helps prevent spinal deformities or abnormal curvatures. This makes it particularly beneficial for skeletal development in newborns. Therefore, it is generally suitable for newborns to sleep on a hard board bed. However, since a newborn's skin is delicate, it is advisable to place a quilt or blanket over the hard surface to avoid skin irritation or pressure marks.
After birth, newborns should not sleep on overly soft surfaces, as this may negatively affect spinal development and potentially lead to conditions such as kyphosis (hunchback). Additionally, excessively soft bedding can hinder the baby’s progress in learning essential motor skills like lifting the head and rolling over. Since all aspects of a newborn’s body are still developing, extra care and attention are required in their daily care routine.
