Is it good for newborns to drink more plain boiled water?
Generally, it is not advisable for newborns to drink excessive amounts of plain water, as it may negatively affect kidney health and potentially lead to discomfort.
Newborns refer to infants within the first 28 days after birth. During this period, an infant's stomach capacity is relatively small. Drinking too much plain water may burden the stomach and cause discomfort. Moreover, newborns are primarily fed with formula milk or breast milk, both of which contain sufficient water to meet their hydration needs. Extra plain water intake may increase the workload on the kidneys, adversely affecting kidney health. Additionally, feeling full from drinking water may reduce the consumption of formula or breast milk, impairing proper nutrient absorption.
For newborns who are exclusively breastfed, additional water supplementation is usually unnecessary. For those on mixed feeding or formula feeding alone, symptoms such as constipation or indigestion may occasionally occur. In such cases, giving plain water is generally acceptable but should be done in moderation and not in large quantities.
