What should I do if I forgot to take my stomach medicine before meals?
If you forget to take your stomach medication before a meal, it can generally be taken again 3 to 4 hours after eating.
Stomach medications are usually taken before meals to protect the gastrointestinal mucosa and promote gastric motility. Commonly used drugs include sucralfate tablets and bismuth potassium citrate capsules. These medications typically form a protective layer in the gastrointestinal tract after ingestion, acting as a barrier that prevents food from directly irritating the stomach lining and causing discomfort. If you forget to take the medication before eating, you may take it afterward; however, to minimize interference from food, it is recommended to wait 3 to 4 hours before taking the dose. By this time, most of the food has emptied from the stomach, so the drug's effectiveness and absorption will be similar to when taken before a meal.
During treatment, patients should generally maintain a light, warm, soft, and easily digestible diet. Spicy, stimulating, greasy, raw, or cold foods should be avoided, as they may excessively irritate the stomach and impair the therapeutic effect of the medication, potentially adversely affecting disease recovery.
