Can sigmoid colon ulcers be cured?
Whether sigmoid colon ulcers can be cured depends on the specific circumstances of the disease.
1. Curable
In clinical practice, sigmoid colon ulcer refers to damage of the colonic mucosa observed during gastroenteroscopy, involving the mucosal muscular layer of the colon. This condition may cause abnormal symptoms such as abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and mucous bloody stools. If a sigmoid colon ulcer is caused by conditions such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, early detection and timely standardized treatment at the initial stage of the disease generally allow for complete recovery, without causing significant adverse effects on the body.
2. Incurable
If sigmoid colon ulcers are not promptly treated and lead to severe complications—such as colon perforation, toxic megacolon, or even colorectal cancer—surgical intervention may become necessary. However, even after treatment, there remains a relatively high risk of recurrence. Therefore, the likelihood of a complete cure is lower, and ongoing management using various approaches is required to prevent further episodes of sigmoid colon ulcer.
