What causes nausea and the feeling of wanting to burp but being unable to?
Nausea with an inability to burp may be caused by indigestion, reflux esophagitis, gastritis, or other conditions.
1. Indigestion
Nausea and difficulty burping may result from indigestion. Patients often have insufficient gastric motility, causing food to accumulate in the stomach and intestines. Fermentation of this food produces gas, leading to bloating and the symptoms described above. This may also be accompanied by loss of appetite, vomiting, and similar symptoms.
2. Reflux Esophagitis
The symptoms may stem from reflux esophagitis. In this condition, stomach acid and gas typically flow backward into the esophagus, causing spasms of the diaphragm and resulting in the aforementioned symptoms. Additional symptoms may include abdominal pain, chest pain, heartburn, and a burning sensation in the stomach.
3. Gastritis
Gastritis can also cause these symptoms. It is usually caused by long-term heavy alcohol consumption or physical trauma damaging the gastric mucosa. Food residues may accumulate in the stomach, or mucus production may decrease. Patients may also experience bloating, abdominal pain, acid reflux, reduced appetite, diarrhea, and other symptoms.
