How to relieve stomach distension and pain
Methods to relieve epigastric distension and pain depend on the underlying cause. Common causes include indigestion, chronic gastritis, and Helicobacter pylori infection.
1. Indigestion
If epigastric distension and pain are caused by irregular eating habits, excessive stress, or overeating leading to indigestion, prokinetic medications may be used under a doctor's guidance. Commonly used drugs include mosapride and itopride.
2. Chronic Gastritis
If chronic gastritis results from frequent consumption of irritants such as coffee or strong tea, or from long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), gastric mucosal protectants can be used to alleviate symptoms. Commonly used medications include bismuth potassium citrate and sucralfate.
3. Helicobacter pylori Infection
If epigastric distension and pain are caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic therapy should be followed as prescribed by a physician to control the infection. Commonly used antibiotics include clarithromycin and amoxicillin. These are often combined with drugs that suppress gastric acid secretion, such as lansoprazole or omeprazole.
