Can pregnant women use iodophor for disinfection?
Pregnant women can generally use povidone-iodine for disinfection, which helps prevent infections, but should do so in moderation.
Povidone-iodine has broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties and can kill bacterial vegetative cells, fungi, protozoa, and some viruses. It can be used to disinfect skin and mucous membranes, treat burns, and manage conditions such as vulvovaginal candidiasis, dermatomycosis, and trichomonas vaginitis. It typically has minimal impact on pregnant women and may promote resolution of inflammation and prevent severe infections. However, excessive use should be avoided, as it may cause skin breakdown or ulceration. It is recommended to perform disinfection under medical guidance to prevent adverse reactions.
After becoming pregnant, women often experience decreased immune resistance, making them more susceptible to infections. If infections occur—such as skin infections—povidone-iodine can be applied locally to disinfect the area, promote recovery from inflammation, and prevent worsening of the infection.
